GARDEN ROOM, TERENURE, DUBLIN 6W

A small extension provides extra living space in the middle of the back garden - integrating the house and the garden together.

CLIENT BRIEF

The clients wished to extend the living space in their home to provide an extra (somewhat) separate room for use as a studio and/or additional living space.

BEFORE

DESIGN

The building has two elements: a garden room with extensive windows and glass doors that can be opened out and also a link space connecting that room back to the house.  The roof overhangs to extend the period in the year when you can sit outside. The extensive glazing allows in plenty of natural light around the year and makes it an attractive space to spend time in.  The (reclaimed) brick adds warmth. Frequently domestic extensions block natural light entering the original ground floor area but in this case the narrow link element allows light to pass.

The rear garden is organised as a courtyard space around the garden room with low maintenance finishes throughout. The garden room as well as the garden itself are now used the whole year around.
